During slow times at work, to stave off boredom and also to block out annoying co-workers, the two young men draw pictures. These pictures are made using ink and what is called the “Triple Dupe Pad,” a book of paper used to place orders in the kitchen. The drawings usually take about a week to make, all the while also being used by fellow employees to take orders; this sometimes leads to other collaborators or in a couple cases, to the loss of the work. The drawings are then scanned and colored in Photoshop where they come to life in stunning technicolor! The subject matter varies from piece to piece, as they are made over a long course of time and under various moods and states of mind. They all retain a playfulness that serves as a coping mechanism after spending a night catering to the endless needs of hungry patrons.

Tim & Jeremy's Mind on Loup

Put it there.

The way I see it, the snail gut on the right is the newscaster and the scene in the background is todays news. Not exactly a slow news day, what with the aliens invading and the mutant gardeners clearing the way for them. There’s even the thought of forbidden, yet true, love. What more do you want out of your 6 o’clock news? It’s got everything! As you could see in the original, Tim and I couldn’t decide who or what the aliens would look like. So, naturally, I made them the two main characters from Tim & Jeremy’s Mind on Loup Number One. That’s right! They’re bringing it all back home. Speaking of that, Jay Milite (sp?) likes that record a lot, Bob Dylan’s “Bringing it All Back Home.” As you all know, Jay is one of the greatest bartenders in New York City, and you can visit him any time on Friday or Saturday evening. Late at night, once all the old customers have gone home, Jay likes to play rock and roll. Preferably at an extremely loud volume, but that’s real late. At around 9 or 10, Jay likes to put on some moderate rock, nothing too crazy for the remaining old folks. And, I’m not dissing him when I say this, but it is usually a handful of albums. You should all come in some time and sit at the bar and tell me if I’m right or not. He usually starts the set off with either Buena Vista Social Club or Marc Ribot and the Prosthetic Cubans. Both great albums. After that, it’s either The Kinks Kronikles or Bob Dylan. After that it used to be David Bowie, but now it’s something else, I think The Happy Mondays or something along those lines. Don’t get me wrong, he certainly switches it up every once and a while and plays some different albums, but these are the staples. I am glad that I like them and find them pleasurable as albums because if I didn’t, I would be in big trouble. This playlist has been going on for years. I introduced him to Kinks Kronikles about 8 years ago, at least. So, almost every weekend for 8 years, that album has played at least once in the course of the evening. Incredible. The last time I heard it, there was some English folks at the bar who had been there for quite sometime, and the whole bar turned into a sing-a-long. It was great. Steven, the new guy, and I were down at our end of the bar doing two part harmony, and the English folks were really going for it at the other end. I think we listened to it twice, by popular demand. It was pretty cool. Jay taught me that bringing in your own CDs and eventually iPods was acceptable behavior. You see, before that introduction, we were always supposed to only play jazz at the Loup because that’s what the old owners did. Now, when you come over on the weekend, it’s mostly rock and roll. I like to play some weird stuff on Sundays, but Jay will be playing those above mentioned CDs forever. I urge all of you, dear readers, to come in and request one of these albums one night when you are in the mood for kicking back, having a margarita, and listening to “Bringing it All Back Home.” Or any of the other albums Jay has. He has an iPod now, so there’s a lot of rock.

I had originally drawn the guy with the rocket in his eye about ten years ago. I was living in Colorado and my living room looked over a vast field that was attached to the local high school. One day in the middle of winter, with a blanket of snow covering the field, a class of students went out into the field to try out their home-made rockets. The rocket to the eye was my interpretation of what happened after they set the rockets off. In this drawing though, there are little aliens with a slingshot shooting rockets all over the place. The other rocket that has crashed into the planet on stilts was another collaborator’s vision. We have a guy who works at the Loup named Javier. I don’t know his last name. He started as a dish washer but has also cooked and been a busboy at the restaurant. He’s a pretty jovial fellow, albeit a bit strange. He also draws pictures, sometimes in the bathroom, sometimes on the board, but he hadn’t collaborated with us until this little rocket. When he first drew it, I was a little upset because I thought it was ruining the composition. However, the greatest part about these drawings is how they evolve with all sorts of outside distractions. Someone will spill wine all over them, wolf drool will end up on them, other people will draw stuff on them, basically they are at the disposal of the restaurant until I take them home. As I was first upset by the collaboration, now I feel like it adds to the dialog of the overall piece. Instead of one rocket, getting a direct hit into this guys eye, they have been trying for at least two minutes to hit their target. I like it. Maybe you noticed that this one is primarily orange and blue. Maybe not. One of the reasons for this could be that I was listening to the Syracuse basketball team take on the South Florida Bulls while coloring this one in. When I say listening, it’s because I was actually listening to the game on streaming radio live from South Florida. I can usually find the games streaming on video, so I watch them in the corner while I do other things, but for some reason, on this day, I couldn’t find the game. So I tried to find it on the streaming radio. It was impossible! I couldn’t believe how hard it was to find a nationally ranked team, playing a division rival, in a game that counts, on the radio. I finally tracked it down through the South Florida’s campus radio station. It was fun to listen to it that way for me, as the commentators are obviously routing for South Florida, and don’t care when the ‘Cuse is dunking all over the place. We won the game handily, and for the last 10 minutes of the game, the guys talked about how they are going to be better next year. It was a sad day for them, but a happy time for me. It’s rare that I remember what I am listening to while drawing and then coloring these things in, since I am always listening to something. But this one now reminds me of Syracuse basketball, which is perfect timing for me to be posting this. No, not because of the whole scandal, that was so last month. I am talking about Syracuse being number 1 in the country as of right this second. I don’t know how long that will last, but for the moment, all of us ‘Cuse fans are pretty happy. Go ‘Cuse!!!

Drive-by karaoke!

Tim and I decided the day that we finished this one that we would dedicate it to Cafe Loup customers who we were fond of who have died. There is one pictured here who was not a customer, but was a friend of Tim’s, and I don’t know his story, but all the other ones I will tell you about. Some of them, I don’t know their last names right off the bat since the only interaction I ever had with them was in the restaurant. Also, I will go in what I remember as being chronological order of their passing. Seymour gets the biggest gravestone in this one. He was a legend at the Cafe Loup. Once a famed food critic for the Times, he was old when I met him and he would sit at the last stool on the bar and talk with Jay for hours on end. He may or may not have had an affair with one of the waitresses before my time who would have been 30 years his younger. Legend. My favorite story is once, early on in my career at the Loup, a bunch of my friends were in and we stayed really late. Long story short; when I asked Jay how much we owed him, Seymour says, “If you do a human pyramid, you don’t have to pay anything.” And like that, we made the pyramid, Seymour took a picture of us and we were free to go. It was awesome. Next was Ruby. She was a flamboyant woman with a taste for red wine. She would come in and drink bottles of it, her teeth turning a reddish gray and she would tell some crazy stories about the good old days. Every one loved her, even though some times she could be a bit long winded. She had a great heart though and was a dancer right up until the end. Next was Malcolm. He was great. He was about 90 when he passed, so he had a pretty good run. He and his friend would come in every Saturday night and I would wait on them. He was very gay, and even at 90 wasn’t afraid to hit on me, 70 years his younger. He thought I looked like Billy Elliot from the broadway play and would call me Billy. We had great conversations though, as we had both spent a lot of time on Cape Cod in our days and both loved New York and culture in general. Last winter, or the one before, he slipped leaving the Loup and never really recovered. I wasn’t working Saturdays anymore, so he kind of just faded away. I miss his style, it was so right. Next was Mort Stone. He was also a famous writer and editor of the Times, I believe. He was very particular about his food and drink, but when you got it right, he was the happiest old dude around. You really felt great when you would get all of his demands correct and he would praise you. He had some problems at the end with dementia. He told Tim right near his last days that he was hearing and seeing some strange things, and actually confessed to Tim that he wasn’t his normal self. That must have been bizarre. He was a good one. Finally, there was Dora, probably the saddest of all. She worked down at St. Vincent’s when it was still open. She would come over after work and have a couple of drinks alone or with friends and simply unwind from the stressful day at the hospital. We were neighbors at one point when I lived on 17th Street and we would see each other almost every day. We were never that close, but she was one of those people in your life that is always there. She got diagnosed with stage 4 cancer one day when she went to work with neck pain. She went to Chemo and eventually, the cancer went into remission. And then like a snap of the fingers, she was gone in a month. It was pretty sad. They were all sad losses to the Cafe Loup community. I am not sure if some or all of them would be happy to be remembered in a strange Halloween type drawing by Tim and I, but we both sincerely hope that they would get a kick out of it. The Loup, after all, is a strange and weird place where all sorts of people and stories come together in a seemingly random fashion. To all the good ones who have passed on, we salute you!

#27 “Prank Call On the Party Line”

I think that the color on this one really creates the story of what may or may not be happening in this little world. Before the color, everything sort of floated around near each other with no real connection. Now, I feel like it is all connected, not unlike the telephone system. “We’re all connected, like New York telephone.” I remember that commercial. Good stuff. Seriously though, the kid on the phone is obviously the central character here, and everything revolves around him. He is making a phone call from a strange land with the sphinx. I think that everything to the right of this kid is all the conversation that he is having but in visual form. I think that even the butt that the phone is embedded in is some sort of vision that this kid is having while on the party line. I could be wrong, it could actually be a picture of the Albany bus station, which I recall looking very similar. No matter the story, I was very happy with the outcome of this one. It really could’ve gone either way since it started out so crazy. Aliens. I love drawing them, but sometimes they come out a little weird and maybe not like a living thing at all. That’s how I felt about the alien on the far right. That thing almost looks like a planet gone wrong, but then finally it has teeth and is eating a worm, so we know it is alive. The thing with the eyes is confusing, but somehow works with all the alienness around it. But who cares about that! What about a cool story to contextualize this picture within the framework of life at the Cafe Loup? Well, I am at a loss because I am writing this blog about a year removed from this drawing and to tell you the truth, I can’t remember much about this drawing, and the circumstances that surrounded the creation of it. I will tell you this though, a lot can change in a year; except at the Cafe Loup. It stays the same no matter what. Same food, same diners, same waitstaff, same bartenders, same old problems. In a lot of ways, this is the way that people want to live their lives. They get into a happy spot and hope that it will never change. The only problem with that is that you actually change all the time, even if the surroundings stay exactly the same; getting grumpier, getting older, getting sicker, getting happier. Maybe this is the reason people always come back to the Loup. They know that it is the same as it has ever been and they want to see how much they have changed by going to a place that they know will be exactly the same as when they left it. Like when you go to the place where you grew up and you notice all the trees are bigger and the places you used to play are so small. It makes you feel that real progress has been made in your life, even though it could only be in physical growth. For people like Tim and I , we are always at the Cafe Loup, so we don’t notice the trees growing or the hiding places shrinking because we are too close to the action the see the progress. Obviously there has been a lot of change in the past year of the Loup, it just doesn’t feel like it to us, and that is not such a bad thing, really. It’s nice to have constants in these volatile times. Stop by the Loup sometime and get that duck dish you loved so much back in 1995. It’s still there, and it’s still delicious.

Sunset in #Greenpoint.
